ANU Student Experience & Career Development
Melinda has a long-standing involvement in design for the tertiary education sector and is a current recipient of a research scholarship from the University of Canberra for her user-centred design techniques (Post Occupancy Evaluation- POE) in pursuit of greater take up of sustainable buildings. Unnecessary resources and energy are consumed when buildings are not designed to meet occupant needs and aspirations, and have to be modified. Occupants of existing buildings can offer powerful insights about the successful and unsuccessful spaces they encounter. Effective techniques are used to reveal these insights, ranging from space use, to thermal comfort, to space flow, presentation and so forth. We maintain a high level of communication throughout the process and feed the learnings from POE into the design. The improvement of the existing built environment need not mean an expansion of it and the synthesis of our design and research has translated to award winning designs.
