Canberra Context

Research

In 2010, Canberra had the largest per capita average houses in Australia and in the last quarter of a century, average household occupant numbers have declined to 2.4 (ABS 2010). These changes have compounded to increase direct and indirect resource and energy consumption, urbanization of landscapes, increase in car dependence and a decline in purchasing and operational affordability

Small houses represent one measurable aspect of sustainable architecture with substantial empirical research published on the derived resource, energy and land use reductions, along with measurable contributions to household purchase and operational affordability. Melinda's research focuses on small houses and occupant behaviors in urban infill developments, including master planned estates, co-housing communities and suburban retrofits.
